The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has recently revealed that the North Korean government-sponsored hacking group Lazarus was responsible for last year’s attack on Harmony’s Horizon Protocol. The attack saw millions of dollars worth of cryptocurrency stolen, leading the FBI to launch an investigation to recover the funds.
The FBI reported that the stolen funds had been sent to various cryptocurrency exchanges, with a portion being frozen with the help of collaboration from the exchanges. It is believed that Binance and Huobi were involved in the recovery of slightly less than $3 million of the stolen funds.
The FBI is continuing its investigation to recover the remaining stolen funds and is also working to prevent the North Korean government from obtaining funding for its missile and WMD development. Last week, more than $60 million of cryptocurrency tied to the attack began to move over the Ethereum-based privacy network Railgun in an attempt to launder the stolen funds.
The agency is urging individuals and organizations to remain vigilant against North Korean hacking activities and to take appropriate measures to protect their networks and digital assets. It is also encourages anyone with information about the attack or related activities to contact their local FBI office.
